چکیده

A severe form of I-cell disease (mucolipidosis II) can present in the newborn period as multiple fractures. The bone disease in these patients is believed to be due to hyperparathyroidism. We report a case where bone disease was present at birth but the parathyroid hormone levels were initially normal and did not increase until 37 d of age. Supplemention with vitamin D was needed to normalize the parathyroid hormone levels despite adequate intake of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus. We suggest that in patients with I-cell disease, continued evaluation for hyperparathyroidism may be necessary despite initial normal parathyroid hormone levels.

Rickets-like radiological and biochemical features of neonatal mucolipidosis II (I-cell disease): report of two cases.

In this paper, two cases with mucolipidosis type II (I-cell disease) (proven in one presenting newborn and presumed in an elder deceased brother) are presented. These infants showed severe skeletal changes with diffuse periosteal new bone formation in long bones and ribs, marked osteopenia, and resorption of scapula, clavicula, and mandible. There was also irregular demineralization of metaphys...

Utility of 99mTc-Sestamibi SPECT/CT in the Early Localization of Metastatic Parathyroid Carcinoma

Parathyroid carcinoma is very rare, with only a few documented cases. Hence, metastatic lesions are infrequently documented on scintigraphic imaging. We present a case of a 63-year-old female presenting with elevated serum levels of ionized calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) who was referred to our department for a parathyroid scan with SPECT/ CT. Parathyroid scintigraphy showed a focus of i...

A case of mucolipidosis II presenting with prenatal skeletal dysplasia and severe secondary hyperparathyroidism at birth

Mucolipidosis II (ML II) or inclusion cell disease (I-cell disease) is a rarely occurring autosomal recessive lysosomal enzyme-targeting disease. This disease is usually found to occur in individuals aged between 6 and 12 months, with a clinical phenotype resembling that of Hurler syndrome and radiological findings resembling those of dysostosis multiplex. However, we encountered a rare case of...

Status of Vitamin D, Calcium and Parathyroid Hormone Levels & Hepatorenal Function in Untreated Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Matched Case-Control Study

Background and Objective: Tuberculosis (TB) remains an ongoing major public health problem in the world. In recent years, experimental evidenc suggests a link between TB and Vitamin (Vit) D. This study was conducted to determine serum Vit D, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and parathormone (PTH) levels in untreated pulmonary TB (PTB) patients. Materials and Methods: In this case control study, 5...
